The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) has endorsed the civil society Extractive Industry Working Group’s position on the draft petroleum policy that was published last month.

“We strongly second and support the recommendations from the CSO working group, in particular regarding the importance of transparency and accountability as a major objective of the petroleum policy, as well as the need for a formal consultative process of all stakeholders involved, in order to build a critical mass of understanding and support from Tanzanian citizens,” reads the NRGI document in part.

NRGI’s input builds on the group’s recommendations by expounding more on the legal and institutional structure of Tanzania’s nascent petroleum industry, raising concerns surrounding the structure, functioning, transparency and accountability of the National Oil Company (NOC) based on international experience and experts’ recommendations.

The Natural Resource Governance Institute promotes the effective, transparent and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources for the public good.
