In February 2009, Tanzania acceded to the EITI following accomplishment of initial requirements of EITI. In a public declaration in mid November 2008, the Government stated Tanzania's commitment to implement the EITI. As of 27th January, 2009 Tanzania had accomplished pre-EITI launch groundwork including the Multi-Stakeholders Group (MSG) formation, its Terms of Reference and a draft costed work plan. The EITI International Board announced admittance of Tanzania to start implementing EITI on 16th February 2009 in Doha, Qatar.
In this regard, five Civil Society representatives were nominated in the first phase of the of the EITI- MSG as they appear in the table below:

As per the requirements, CSO representatives to the MSG are to be nominated after every three years, which is why CSO's are holding a two day event (18-19 October 2012) to nominate their representatives for the second EITI-MSG.
During the event, Mr. Silas Olang from the Revenue Watch Institute said that the main objective of bringing CSO's together at the event is to make the whole selection process a fair and transparent one.
Alex Ruchyahinduru, Manager for Communications and Advocacy at the Policy Forum Secretariat took the CSO representatives through the criteria for CSO representation in the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative - MSG so that they would nominate suitable and eligable candidates.
Some of the criteria (individual and institutional qualifications) he mentioned were:- Relevance, interest and competence; The coalition/organization must be able to participate consistently at Executive head/CEO level/competent authority within the organisation; The coalition/organisation must be a registered not-for-profit organization that has been in existence for a minimum of 2 years from date of registration; The coalition/organisation should be cognizant of the fundamental role of women in Tanzania, especially in mining, environment, land use, workforce, etc, and there should be gender considerations.
Mr. Silas Olang closed the discussion for day one and asked participants to reflect the mentioned criterias for the selection which is to conducted on the last's days event.
