Training on New EITI standards for Tanzania CSOs

There have been increasing calls amongst citizens, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders for greater transparency in state-investor contracts as well as revenues that companies pay the government of Tanzania. Partly to deal with the challenge of transparency regarding revenues from extractive industries, the government applied to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Since its introduction in Tanzania, EITI has and continues to evolve. The country is now transitioning to the new EITI Standards. To consolidate the EITI in Tanzania, CSOs and mining communities will need to be updated on the new EITI developments so as to make effective use of the EITI information disclosed in Tanzania.

In early April 2014, Policy Forum in collaboration with the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TEITI) Secretariat organized a two-day training in Arusha for civil society on the new EITI standards and its implementation in Tanzania, specifically looking at the challenges and opportunities for upcountry CSO networks to engage with the Tanzania EITI Multi-stakeholder Group work plan.

To this end, Policy Forum would like to again partner with TEITI to expose Dar es Salaam-based and Lindi NGOs to the new 2013 EITI standards which require among others the disclosure of licenses, production data and encourage the disclosure of the contracts entered by countries with extractive companies.

The overall goal of the proposed program is to enable civil society and in extractives communities to fully engage on the EITI Standard transition process. More specifically, to:

      i.        enable CSOs and media make effective use of the findings and recommendations of TEITI reports as an important tool to demand transparency and accountability within the extractive sector by non-state actors and policy makers.

ii.        enable extractives communities from the Mtwara region (mining) and Lindi region (natural gas) engage in EITI processes
